Sports Media Frenzy
Brad | 19 August, 2009 11:18

"Is it possible for the rose to say, 'I will give my fragrance to the good people who smell me, but I will withhold it from the bad?' Or is it possible for the lamp to say, 'I will give my light to the good people in this room, but I will withhold it from the evil people'? Or can a tree say, 'I'll give my shade to the good people who rest under me, but I will withhold it from the bad'? These are images of what love is about."

-- Anthony De Mello

I'm not the most religious person in the world and I have been known to hold a grudge but I do believe in second chances and I hope Micheal Vick makes the most out of his second chance. But I am sure the Pitino and Vick are happy about Brett Favre joining the Vikings to pull some of sports media frenzy away from them.

iHot In The iSummer
Brad | 04 July, 2009 12:33

Oh, it's not the new iPhone 3Gs that is the problem, it's the weather. And all these people with discolored and too hot to touch your face iPhones thought it was the phone over-heating.

My phone does get hot when it is accessing the word a lot. When I'm surfing the web and downloading apps and have the bluetooth on at the same time, the bottom inch or so of the phone gets warm. Also, when plugged in to charge, it will get warm in the same area when I'm surfing the web. But nothing as hot as some of these reports.

So hot that the white case is discoloring? That is hot. Now, the reports that iPhones are getting so hot one cannot place them next to one's face, seemed like it might be an exaggeration. But if temperatures are getting to the point that cases are warping and bubbling and discoloring, I wouldn't want that next to my face either.

The fact that the phone has an overheat warning makes me realize that apple knew this would be an issue. Which totally sounds like a Dilbert cartoon – "Our product is hurting out consumers." "Make it a feature." – and not like apple. Steve Jobs must have been out of the office when that issue came up.

Foxy But Not On Fire
Brad | 30 June, 2009 14:00

The latest version of Firefox was made available today. Firefox 3.5. I should be excited as it boasts faster speeds. When Safari released its latest version, I was impressed by its speed. It seemed fast even on my slow internet connection. I really wanted to use it. But the add-ons of Firefox kept me there. I just love Firefox.

Well, I'm not that excited about the so called faster Firefox because it seems to load up my web pages at the same speeds and the sample video on "Here's what is new" webpage took a while to load up. And the sad news is that not all my add-ons are compatible with Firefox 3.5.

The one I am missing the most right now is Coffee Cup. With one click it would load up a bunch of web pages I wanted to read that day. And i can program it to load up different websites depending on the day of the week. So, on Monda, Tuesday, and Firday it will load up in one of many tabs XKCD.com and not load it up on days it doesn't update - like Tuesdays and Thrusdays - which really is how I keep track of what day of the week it is ;)

If you are a Firefox fan, download the latest version and tell me if you see some improvements.

Flash Me
Brad | 24 June, 2009 10:54

I remember people complaining that when apple claimed that their iPhone browser gave the full web experience, it was a lie because it didn't offer Flash. In fact, in the UK a few iPhone ads were taken off the air because of this - truth in advertising and all.

Since, I keep hearing complaints about the lack of Flash on smartphone webbrowsers. Well, yesterday Adobe announced that Flash would be coming to smartphones. Exciting stuff, right? I've heard some technical mumbo-jumbo as to why Flash will not be headed to the iPhone.

So, i figure I will patiently wait for flash - it's not like there is any main website I go to that has flash and really the flash players on sports sites I visit are kinda annoying as it is. And flash ads not shoing up isn't really a  problem, if you catch my drift.

But then today, it was announced that Flash isn't just coming, it is here on the latest HTC phone HERO. HERO is the latest phone running Android OS. It runs the current v1.5 software but has a UI integrated [which is really a bunch of widgets] and it looks slick so people are exciteed about it.

Will i jump ship for a new phone because of this? No, of course not. But I will wait with a bit more anticipation for Flash to be reaching my phone.

iPhone On The Cheap?
Brad | 20 June, 2009 10:00

I clicked a link this morning that showed a bit of irony in that one could get an iPhone cheaper by using Bing. Or is that "Bing!"?Anyway, it made me smile.

And what may be good news, it looks like the FCC is going to investigate phone manufacturers working out unique and exclusive deals with mobile phone providers. This can only be a good thing as being locked down to a certain provider can suck.

My Android and Me
Brad | 01 June, 2009 16:38

I think I may be spending too much time messing with my phone. I got the G1 running Android software a few weeks ago and am constantly serching the web for more tricks and apps and even wallpapers for the phone.

I've forced the latestest OS update - without hacking my phone (or rooting my phone as it is called - I did not root my phone!) - and I am pretty happy with it.

It doesn't do email as well as my blackberry did. And it's battery life is just awful - but not as bad as some reports (no one irl has shown that it has 1/3rd the life of the iPhone) - and I seem to obsess about the battery life ... a lot. I have three apps on my phone right now that help monitor and conserve battery life and am always looking for more. Since I work at a battery store, I have gotten a spare battery and now have a hi-capacity battery on order.

So much else I love about the phone. A bit too much maybe. What are the apps that I use the most and like? Well, let us be clear that the Android market is not as robust as iThe iPhone iStore iIs but it does have a lot of apps. I like chompsms for my texting. And K-9 for my mail. Twidroid for my twitter [yes, i said I wouldn't get a twitter app but I did and love it - props and runner up is twit2go].Shazam is magical - seriously - and available on most smart phones. And shopSavvy is entertaining. Where seems pretty darn good but has failed me a few times.

And do not get me started on my wallpaper apps. Storks and stupid seascapes is all you will hear about.

How Many Bras?
Brad | 16 January, 2009 12:10

So, "they" say that American women on average own six bras. Really? I would think that Victoria Secrets would have gone out of business a long time ago if each women out there only owned 6 bras.

Bu this also made me realize that I have no idea how may bras women I know own. So, i thought I would try a survey.

But one cannot just send a txt message out to each woman one knows asking, "How many bras do you own?" It just looks a bit pervy.

So, i thought I would ask here and hope that I get enough answers. Please, let me know. Is this statistic off? Please, let me know.

now, don't count sports bras. Sports bras do not count in this statistic.

Vitamins + Water = All You Need
Brad | 09 November, 2008 23:02

I may have an addiction. it seems I drink a LOT of Vitamin Water ™. A real lot. Like three to eight bottles of th stuff each day.

I have "at least" fifteen bottles in my car and way more than that in empties in my car [I'm going to recycle them]. I dont' know what it is about them.I just drink a lot of them.

I like the witty saying on the side explaining the flavor, sure. But that cannot be why i drink so many of them or I would be buying and drinking Jones Sodas.

I like the Revive the best. It's a great hangover drink. I drink the Essentials and XXX and Power-C. I'll drink the Energy and lemonade flavor but It's not one of my favorites.

Anyway, i drink a lot of the stuff.

And, yes, I have read the small print at the bottom and it makes me laugh - even though I went to a liberal arts college.

Olive You
Brad | 26 October, 2008 22:26

I don't know why, but for a while now, I have craved olives. Not any old olive either. But big Queen size green olives.

I think it started with having some bloody marys at the sports bar when I was watching the football on Sunday mornings. The olive was just so good. big and so fat. I started ordering my bloody mary with extra olives and they wouldn't just give me one extra olive but three of them on a stick on top of my drink.

I found myself impulse buying a jar of them the other day. After I got home, all i could think was, "I should of gotten the bigger jar." And for dinner the other night i had tatter tots, beer, and green olives. Not the most nutritious [and it doesn't sound that appealing] but I sure did enjoy those olives.

heck, if I had olives in my place RIGHT NOW, I would be eating them.

Like I said, i don't know why, but for a while now, i have craved olives. I hope I am not pregnant.

Brad | 24 October, 2008 11:27

I don't know if getting the internets and email in my pocket was the best idea for me. It seems. I sit down to write a blog post and if my internets is slow, i grab my blackberry and it's much faster - course, i have a horrible internet connection.

It doesn't help that I can now get out of bed even slower because I dont' have that urge to load up my computer to check the weather and read friend's blogs - i can do that in bed now with the blackberry. i've had a few late days because of it. Being able to IM fro my bed in the morning is even stranger. Hmmm, maybe I shouldn't have revealed that as I can see some IM conversations starting with, "in bed?"

In a TUB!
Brad | 09 October, 2008 11:25

I've had some adventures lately that I should blog about. The Weezer concert, the Bikini Contest, and event some off beat secret desires of Brad. And really I will get to blogging aout them.

But i have to tell you about this first. Corn starch in a tub. Yes, CORN STARCH IN A TUB!

No mor will i fumble with the papper in the box and spill corn starch all over the place. no longer will I stand patently as i tap tap tap at the side of box hopeing the right amount will fall from the bottom of the box.

It comes in a tub now and i'll be able to scoop it out with a spoon. Why did this not happen 20 years ago? It is a mystery to me. And a mystery that i am glad has been solved in my lifetime.

Go Topless?
Brad | 07 October, 2008 16:39
Have you heard about gotopless.org? Not to be confused with gotopless.com which is porn. But gotopless.org is a website for a group that wants equal rights for women. Not just any equal rights but the right for a woman to be topless antwhere a man could be topless. Yes, like beaches or parks or pick-up basketball games. Now, IKnow many of you will think that as a forward-thinking, pro-equal rights guy, that I would be all for this. But I'm not. While it is true I like to gaze upon breasts -big or small- I do also like the mystery. There is some excitement in seeing boobs. And if I can see them any old time ... Well, that takes the fun out of it. So, call me old fashion and call me a hypocrite for only being pro-equal rights on some things but not on breast issues. I just cannot support -heh "support"- thia ideal. This kind of thung has me worried about the ecnomy as well. Some people make monet off of seeing boobs. What about them? They could lose jobs with boobs being everywhere!  #

Abraham Lincoln said, “Politicians are a set of men who have interests aside from the interests of the people and who, to say the most of them, are, taken as a mass, at least one long step removed from honest men”

Seems to b so true:

Sure, sure, we could probably blame their speachwriters for the miscues and egsagerations but … it doesn't make them any more honest.

Bikinis Better For Volleyball
Brad | 20 August, 2008 12:14

So, I came across this "news" article and i thought I would share it with you. mostly for those who wonder why the Vollyball bikinis are so darn small.

Olympian: Bikinis better for volleyball
A three-time Olympian from California says the two-piece
bikinis sported by many beach volleyball players are more
than fashion, they're function. Holly McPeak, 39, who brought
home the bronze from the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens,
Greece, said players are given the option of wearing a more
modest one-piece uniform but that choice comes with some
uncomfortable side-effects, ABC News reported. "When you
dive, the sand goes down the top and collects in the bottom,"
she said. Fabrizio Rossini, press officer for the Federation
Internationale de Volleyball, which officially governs Olympic
volleyball, said most female beach volleyball players prefer
the bikinis. "It's a very tough sport," Rossini said in an
e-mail. "Only the best athletes in the world can perform at
this level, playing more than one hour, running and jumping
on a complicated surface like the sand, under strong wind,
heavy rain or the hottest conditions. If they didn't like
their uniforms, the FIVB would have received tons of
complaints for them, which is not the case."
I want to use this as an excuse to put bikini images on my blog as well.

Most Interesting …
Brad | 18 August, 2008 14:33

Yes, the "Stay Thirsty, My Friends" ads still make me laugh. I love how it is not the same ad over and over. Last month I came across a flow chart ad to see if one could be a good assistant for the most Interesting Man in the World.

The chart had questions like: Are you adept at smuggling microdots? Would you use a GPS when lost in the depths of the darkest African jungle? Would you help me hunt for a rare, possibly mythical, poisonous fish? Would you then taste said poisonous fish before I do?

Other ads have his advice like:

Those who spend too much time shaving below the Adam's apple have too much time.

I've done some of my best thinking on barstools. And about barstools.

I feel being boring is a choice. Those mild salsas and pleated khakis don't buy themselves

Guys, leave the tight pants to the ladies.

I just get so happy to see another ad with these witty comments. Stay Thirsty, My Friends.

44 1/2 Months Till I'm 40
Brad | 17 August, 2008 14:06

"A man has more character in his face at forty than at twenty--he has suffered longer"

    –Mae West

I've got some pretty serious wrinkles around my eyes. I've got more gray hair that not gray on my head now. I'm grumpy without my coffee in the morning. And I have no desire to run through te streets causing trouble.

But for some reason, people still treat me like I'm a a 20 something. The lack of respect I don't mind. It's the comments about certain women being too old for me to be checking out. it's the invitations to do go do nonsense things when I would rather be watering a lawn and yelling at the neighbor kids.

Some days, i'd rather be treated as an old man.

Manscara???
Brad | 30 July, 2008 11:13

When I first heard of this, I thought it was a joke of sorts. But I came across this "news" article - which we must all take with a grain of salt:

British high-end retailer Superdrug has announced a line
of makeup geared exclusively toward men -- a line that
includes "Guy-liner" and "Manscara."

Jeff Wemyss, director of trading for Superdrug, said the
Taxi Man line of male-oriented cosmetics is not exclusively
for those looking to make their appearance more feminine,
the Daily Mail reported.

"These days you can be macho and wear makeup," he said.
"If you look at people like Russell Brand and Robbie
Williams, they both wear makeup and they are both very
red-blooded men. Men are more obsessed with their
appearance than ever before. There is no longer any pain
in being seen to be vain."

Wemyss said Guy-liner and Manscara will be joined in the
line later in the summer by a machismo-powered lip balm
and a manly concealer.

First of all, when did Robbie Williams become manly? Did I miss that? Secondly, there are only four times when any of you will catch me with eyeliner on:

1. I am dead [or photshopped]

B. I am in a play [or a movie or some tv show or rock band]

III. Halloween

Four. I'm dressed up as a vampire and have some incredibly incredibly incredibly hot vamprilla/succubus attached to my hip

And concealer? What the fuck do I have to conceal? Make-up + Men ≠ manly [except in the above instances].

Tater Soup
Brad | 11 July, 2008 00:03

I got this recipe for potato soup from a friend. An attractive, funny, fun, engaging friend. Of course, I have changed the recipe to fit my tastes.

no, I'm not going to go all Grunt on you and post a recipe each week. This can be done all in one pan but i use two.

I get three cups of veggie broth and put it on high heat. then i chop up some leeks in smaller than bite size pieces.

Oil in a pan, the leeks and garlic go in the oil and sweat a bit. This is when i add salt and pepper to the garlic an leeks. Then a pinch of rosemary. I crumble it in my fingers if it is dry rosemary to get the flavor out of it

I chop up three medium size red potatoes while things are sweating and broth is trying to boil. Smaller than bite size and i leave the skins on. I then put the taters in the pan with the garlic and leeks. i put a bit more pepper on them.

I then put a bit of oil in the boiling broth to stop it from boiling over. Then take everything in the pan and put it in the boiling broth. I let it boil for a bit and then turn down the heat for a while and let it cook.

When the taters are soft enough in the soup, I add a cup of soy milk. Heat that up and cook it for a bit and then finish off with another pinch of rosemary.

I put half in a sealed container that goes in my fridge for later and half i eat up. It's really yummy.
