The Bajoran and the Borg
by 3jane

Something has kept me busy the last few months... literally cycled around my head. I was trying out things I could do with my favorite affiliation - the Borg. After letting go of scout swarms, mainly because of the Big Picture, I studiedtwo other deck archetypes. One was Stop First Contact, which I liked for Population 9 Billion-All Borg mainly. But one thing kept bugging me: the necessity for the use of Q-Tents. I always thought getting two of them early (for Locutus and Temporal Vortex) was too much to worry about. Lots of people donŽt even have a Locutus. It's kind of a show-off deck. The other was simply going for the dual-icon missions with good old Establish Gateways and Assimilate Planet. That would be quite easy to pull off, and after I discovered that two of the dual missions are Bajoran, it started coming together. The only worry was probing, until I decided to go strictly blue - almost. With the consequence of not using Spheres or Scout Vessels, but good old-fashioned Cube. Nothing glitzy... However, I put up some "strict dress code" for the deck:

  • It should have 30 cards in the draw deck.

...frightened yet?

  • It should be simple and streamlined.
  • It should be fast (for a Borg deck).
  • It should have 18 dilemma slots.

...oops, two of Žem just got sucked up by a wormhole...

  • It should have built-in probing.
  • It should have optimized battle capability.
  • It should be easy to handle.
  • You should never draw an irrelevant card.

Sounds good? Well, I'll have a go.

How It Works:

There are some essential parts to this deck:

  1. The Queens: This deck is definitely built around the Queen. She downloads Seven and the other drones; she lets you change Objectives if you need to; and she gives you every possible skill to share. She's in the draw deck five times, so she should be in the opening draw more often than not. A Queen by turn one helps this deck more than anything.

  2. Seven of Nine: Can you say Cube-staffing? This is the first drone to get, either via the Queen's download or via Awaken. She's kind of an interface between the Queen and the rest of the deck, and together they give you two downloads a turn. And in this deck, you can download everything but...

  3. The Awakens: I prefer Awakens over Activate Subcommands. Three reasons: They don't cost your card play, they play at start of battle, and they don't exhaust your draw deck. They are in the deck four times, and believe me: If you get no Queen in the first draw, there will be an Awaken... or two. Guess what drone to grab then?

Some less essential but useful parts:

  4. The Cryosatellite: Bareil is there for two purposes: to Service the Collective (both dual missions are Bajoran), and in case the Queen changes Plans to Assimilate Homeworld. The Antique Machine Gun is there to further enhance battle capabilities. Beam-in party? Lose two... each time. One problem could be that dual missions are giveaways. So be sure to put those Defensive Measures to good use.

  5. The Assault Drones: SECURITY for dilemmas - OK. Awaken two of them to join you just in time for that boarding party - invaluable. Everybody knows personnel battle is our weakness - or is it? Aaarghh!!!

  6. The emergency brake: Every Borg Cube should have one. ;-)
If they try to steal your mission (especially the one with the Cryosat beneath it), or if blowing up hostile Borg seems like a good idea, well - that's what Defensive Measures are for.

Some more points:

  • There are only 5 bad probes in the draw deck - the TNG should be gone before the first probe, and I suggest STP download for the AU Door. Download one or two Assault drones, and you're OK.

  • The Sphere is there to use for "redshirting" in space. You can avoid any number of nasty things doing so.

  • For gameplay enhancement, you can change Maglock / Borg Ship to Undetected Beam-In / Cytherians and HQ: Defensive Measures to Assimilate Starship. Beam in the Complink Drone among the others. Since the ship will be under Cytherians, they cant battle your intruders. You'll assimilate the ship effortlessly. No resistance. Just beware of Reactor Overload...

Some words of warning:

  • In true Borg fashion, there are no backup ships, TNGs, whatever. No safety net. Think Borg - "We Will Succeed!"

  • And of course, the deck should adapt to service your needs. Think about Intruder Forcefield, Tachyon Drone... but keep in mind that you will need one of those Queens to come up early, so don't tinker with the deck size.

Resistance is (uh, quite) futile!
