Interview With Data's Son
by Mathew Woolaghan

Curzon Dax: First Question, just for the readers info, who are you, how old are you and where do you live?

Data's Son: My name is Kevin Cline I am 16 years old and I live in Salem, Oregon.

Curzon Dax: Salem, as in the witch hunts and stuff?

Data's Son: Nope different Salem but that would be kinda kewl if I lived in a town with that kinda reputation.

Curzon Dax: hehe. When was the last time you lost an online game?

Data's Son: O Gosh!!! umm....... Wes would probably know I almost lost one the other day but I'm going to have to say just a little bit before ISOWC started I'm guessing. The last one that I can actually remember was against Wes in a DS9 sealed deck match.

Curzon Dax: and in standard constructed?

Data's Son: Standard constructed well it's been sometime..... I'd say about 6-7 months.

Curzon Dax: Do you know who it was against?

Data's Son: Nope, I honestly cant remember.

Curzon Dax: ok. Who's the toughest person you've ever played online?

Data's Son: o gosh...I've faced a lot of tough players since I have been playing online. Though most people know that me and The Ninja Scot have a rivalry and he's probably the most challenging person I've ever had the chance to play against online.

Curzon Dax: And who's the toughest you've faced in real life?

Data's Son: Well that would also have to be The Ninja Scot.....I played Jason Drake this year at the regional and although he did beat me he wasn't as challenging to beat if I had come prepared as TNS would have been, I'm sure.

Curzon Dax: So you think TNS is pretty good then?

Data's Son: Yep, he is a very good player like a lot of people online. I've had some close games in the past and lost some good games also but TNS will be someone that I always will have a slight fear in facing cause with him you NEVER know what's going to happen and well I've gotten real predictable lately...I'm just hoping I keep my streak going long enough to last through ISOWC after that I'm open for loosing some challenging matches to players :}

Curzon Dax: What affiliation do you play as the most?

Data's Son: Well I play a wide variety of them...but I'm always carrying a Borg deck on me somewhere, those nasty assimilators got me to the top of the HoF and I just like the way they play, they have a lot of power and after a few turns can really screw up your opponents strategy if you pick off his homeworld and he isn't packing a lot of AU personnel.

Curzon Dax: what is the most powerful Borg strategy out there?

Data's Son: Well with BoG taking away the ability to scout through your opponents space missions and pick up your cryo with their affiliations matching counterpart aboard. Which is only if they're prepared and ready to face a Borg deck which still a lot of players aren't. I would have to say a cube deck...setting up a cube getting it staffed and flown into the alpha quadrant is becoming pretty popular. You can use your Queen and 7 of 9 to d/l the drones you need and those countermeasure drones can d/l the adapt cards you need. Also with the Compulink drone prevent you from being crashed this can all happen on about turn 3 and ready for you to start scouting. Along with the cube ability to find any weak ships and blow it apart, which is also nice. The Borg deck though like this can stop any VCM deck out there simply by going over and grabbing Barclay as a counterpart then nabbing Earth while you're there. So they're are still a powerful threat but also have their weaknesses.

Curzon Dax: Well, I for one certainly come prepared for Scout Stealing Decks, but with 6 space missions that makes me a little paranoid ;)

Data's Son: hehe, well if you have the 1 HA from BoG it will wipe out all of their EG's and, hehe, if you really want to be mean flip it after they setup the 4th one and have them go right back down to 0 :} That's if they're targeting your missions. If they target their own missions they're ok.

Curzon Dax: What affiliation do you play as the least?

Data's Son: The Federation, though I might pick up a VCM deck that I have had in my head but I don't know...

Curzon Dax: Why don't you play as them much?

Data's Son: I just don't see them as more than a lot of good skills and easy to bypass dilemmas....they don't have much speed other than a VCM deck which can be shut down very quickly, they can attack but at the cost of you loosing your Q's tent which is very irritating. And also I can make a better deck out of all the other affiliations compared to a federation deck.

Curzon Dax: What affiliation do you least like playing against?

Data's Son: I like playing against them all....I don't have an affiliation I don't like to play against, for me that's any affiliation or deck that beats me mainly are the ones I don't like to face. Which can be any affiliation but I do always love a good challenge.

Curzon Dax: What affiliation beats you the most then?

Data's Son: I would have to say the last time I was getting beaten severely it was against the Borg decks but now I'm not sure if they could still do it.

Curzon Dax: What's your all-time favourite strategy?

Data's Son: My all time favorite is a good Music/Barclays Transporter Phobia deck. It was the first deck I won a tournament with. Now that ships can land though it isn't as effective but I always will like that deck alone with my old Ajur/Boratus/archaeology deck. That deck was extremely powerfull also and some day I might take it back out speed it up a bit and see how it goes.

Curzon Dax: Do you play cheese very often?

Data's Son: Not much actually. I have never used a Q-bypass deck although I did take a cheese deck to my regional but I mean come on everyone takes a cheese deck to the regional. I don't like cheese decks but that's just me. I have strategies that might be considered cheese but hey every deck has a little bit of it somewhere.

Curzon Dax: Who do you play against the most?

Data's Son: Well I play a lot against Fish aka Livingston cause he's always around and willing to play. I'm up for playing anyone though that wants to. I have to play you guys online here to test my decks out because I don't have anyone around here to play against. Plus players online come from all over so I might get a edge on the ones out here by hearing about a strategy that everyone out here has yet to think of.

Curzon Dax: Who do you think is currently good enough to beat you?

Data's Son: Anyone can beat me.....I'm wondering also who it's going to be and hoping that it wont be in ISOWC.

Curzon Dax: Do you ever get other peoples advice on your decks?

Data's Son: All the time!!! I am always wanting input on my decks and any ideas people have that might make it any better. I have made some really crummy decks before and thanx to the help of other people's suggestions and ideas the decks have actually turned out pretty decent.

Curzon Dax: What card do you use the most?

Data's Son: That would have to probably be Computer Crash...I always have about 3-4 in my decks.

Curzon Dax: wow.... So, who is your tip to win ISOWC?

Data's Son: who do I think will win?

Curzon Dax: yup (sorry, my English-ness floating through ;) )

Data's Son: Well I have to say me...I only need to win 1 more round to make it into the finals. Though it's going to be between probably me, Spock, Taris, ShekBo, Jenice or Lore.....I have a strong feeling that one of those people will win it...No offence to the rest of you players in ISOWC that still have a chance of making the finals, these are just the guys I know and have played against and I feel will probably take the championships. Though I would love to sweep ISOWC with 100-0 games for the whole thing.

Curzon Dax: And who so you think'll win SOTC?

Data's Son: Well I have to say our Team of course Curzon :} Though there will be some teams right on our back I feel that we have the skill in each department and that I'm sure will sweep with wins at least 2 parts of SOTC for our team.

Curzon Dax: Yeah, OTSD is a sure fire win with the player we've got doing it ;)

Data's Son: Yep along with the DS9 constructed part and definitely the Constructed part...And as always I'm sure my good buddy Lore will pull off another sweep of his sealed deck section.

Curzon Dax: ;) and for some reason the Editor has asked me to ask you about your regional :)

Data's Son: hehe well my regional deck was a flat out turn 1 win based on bonus points. So you can see why I ran into a few problems when Jason only used 2 missions....I couldn't possibly take his 2 missions for enough points to win. The deck worked out great though it gave me a 4th place spot in my very first regional ever. Though I might hopefully be attending the Seattle open and if I do the editor will be receiving a deck and a report about how things went. I wont divulge that deck right now though. It's going to be fierce though and a challenge to beat. So to TNS who will be going and facing me there and to the rest of you at Seattle good luck but watch your backs because I just might be able to show, especially after an occurrence a few days ago making me really wanting to go to prove a few people wrong and crush a certain individual who I know will be there.

Curzon Dax: Ok, thanks for the interview, that's it. Anything you'd like to add?

Data's Son: Well I just want to thank you also for wanting to interview me and doing a very good job at it and thanx to the editors and everyone else you has built up WNOHGB and keeps it running. Also I will see you all in the Lounge.
