Vulcan Regional Report
by William Springer Saturday, October 9, 1999 - 11:45 AM I arrive at Enchanted Grounds and get a PADD and decklist from Evan - my draw deck takes two sheets. ;-) I notice I'm missing one of my Bajoran Wormholes - I'm down to two. We end up with 20 players. I used a Borg Cube deck (and won) at my last two tournaments, and Cardassian at the two before that, so I toss together a Klingon armada. We use the downstairs playroom of Enchanted Grounds, which is HUGE - it could easily hold well over a hundred players. Game 1: vs Greg I'm hoping to get someone easy for the first game to warm up. Last year I got Patrick. This
year I get Greg. ARRRGH! I make my usual first-game mistakes and lose 70-0. (timed loss)
Game 2: ??? I'm in the 2nd to last game. :-p I quickly blow up his facilities. He stalls a bit, but not
enough to call Evan over. I finally manage to do some missions, then pass the last delimma at
the last mission a half second before Evan calls time. Whew!
Game 3: ??? Again, I blow up my opponent's facilities pretty quickly. Once he sees there's nothing he
can do, he plays quickly (draw - go), though he tries to Kivas me out of cards ;-) I complete
my last mission 2 minutes before time.
Game 4: ??? Now I'm in the second game. ;-) I blow up a HQ. Then I blow up an outpost. Then I blow up
the HQ again. ;-) I stupidly redshirt mining survey and lose 10 points to a Lack of Preparation - eventually I'm at 93! (ouch) I manage to solve another mission with 8 minutes remaining. I am now in second place.
Game 5: vs Brad DeFruiter He's playing his enhanced PNZ deck. I realize 3 things:
He goes first, loses some people to a delimma combo. I get a ship out and Korris dies to an
Empok Nor delimma for the 3rd or 4th time today. He loses another person, and I get the ship into the Neutral Zone. He doesn't seem to be drawing Isabellas and I manage to get 3 ships in the Neutral Zone. I kill his ship, then comment on forgetting to add the espionage. *DOH* He plays a personnel or something. Then I realize I have the Sisters of Duras on thier ship! I change them and announce that I'm stealing the mission. His face is hilarious! Unfortionately, after a minute he remembers his HQ: Defensive Measures, which stops me. ATA clears out my personnel, and some Isabellas get rid of my ships. I get Govenor Worf out just in time to die to another ATA. :-p (wondering why I wasn't Temporal Waking the ATAs? After I did it the first time he Fire Sculture'd it. *DOH* Gotta add that to my deck) I try a Regenerate, but he Long Live the Queen's it and takes out my 6 best Klingons. I manage to get some more out anyway, but he's able to Isabella me enough to score a PNZ. I'm at -5 from an Oof! and time is called with the score 60-(-5) At least my record is intact: all wins against Brad in non-regionals and all losses in regionals! ;-p
Game 6: vs Kate DeStephen I have a bit of trouble getting the cards I need, while she's AMSing a bunch of personnel.
Eventually I get an armada out and send it at her outpost. Meanwhile, she's scanned several of
her missions. I get my 3 ships (small armada) there and damage the outpost. She moves the Thunderchild over to the next mission and triggers the Borg Ship. It damages her ship, then
moves over, damages two of mine, destroys one, and is damaged. I move my ships over and kill
the Thunderchild. Next turn, I realize I should have gone after the Husnock (doh!) as she brings it over, solves the mission for 55! points with 4 mission specialists, then docks again. I damage the husnock and leave another mini-armada undocked at Empok Nor to kill the Borg Ship when it comes around. Before I can kill the Husnock, Kate solves her outpost mission for the win, 100-45.
Game 7: Brad DeFruiter vs Kyle Craft Half an hour after the game starts, Brad Isabellas his opponent's lone ship, solves the PNZ, wormholes to the other PNZ he cleared, solves it, and heads for his third year at Worlds with 5 full wins, 1 timed win, and one true tie. I get another 7th place coaster, which is now on my shelf next to the other one and the 4th place from '97. ;-) Good Luck to Brad at Worlds and Kate in the DecipherCon Open and team tournaments.
