Massachusetts State Championship Report
by the Green Knight

Well, I had spent the last month working on a neat little Borg deck to bring to the tourney on Saturday, but Monday I decided it was far to slow to be competitive. In the end I brought an old-fashioned Bajoran Mission Solver deck which I threw together Wednesday and didn't have the time to playtest before the tourney. The basic idea for the deck is to get out the two Kai's by the second turn, get Odo out on the first w/ an interceptor so as to scan Bajor on the first turn, then get the Emissary and Kira out so that I can report Bajorans to wherever The Emissary is. It worked well in theory, but in reality, that's a different story. ;-)

I arrived at Jam's Comics and Collectibles around 10:00, half an hour before the tourney was supposed to start and waited with Steve Clicquennoi (aka Kor) and Chris Brennan (Rom), who was the TD for the day. Eventually enough people showed so that we could get started (we started with just 7, but Tom Langberg showed up at the end of the first round to make it 8). So, onto the tournament!

First Round: Bye ;-)

Second Round: vs. Alex Knapp (Klingon mission solver)
Well, I had gotten everything started ASAP and was off and running by the 3rd turn. All that I really remember from this round is the last turn of our game. It was 78-76 Alex and he had just enough personnel to plow through one of my dilemma combos at a space mission to get 35 pts for the win. 100-76 Alex, I would've won the next turn;-)
2(-24)

Next Round was against Steve Cliquennoi (Kor) and he was playing his classic Supernova/BA Borg Deck. I had played against this deck online a few times, so I knew the only thing that could save me is speed. I had thought he was going to use this deck so I had my missions as being 3 space and 3 planet so that they wouldn't become out of balance with just two Supernova'd missions. I got out my guys as fast as I could, I was basically saved by a bad first draw on Steve's part. He knew he was going to loose after I had finished with the mission phase. He got a cube out on the 4th turn I believe, then he got to the AQ on the 6th, by then it was 70-0 me, I then went to Relocate Settlers and plowed through his combo for the win. 100-0, me.
4(+76)

This put me in 2nd place. Next Round I played against Shane Wilhelmson, who is one of the BEST players I've ever played against in a tournament or elsewhere. Amazingly, we were both playing the same deck. We both had used the same missions and facilities, I got the Chambers, he had the DS9. ;-) We both realized the potential of stealing each other's missions, as Fair Play doesn't have any effect. So, I got my guys out by the 4th turn as usual and started attempting missions. One problem, Emissary adds +2 integrity to all Bajorans in play. I had seeded my Friendly Fire+ Center of Attention + In The Pale Moonlight combo at Bajor and already had the Emissary out. The lowest attribute that I had was a 4. That caused me to go in search of other missions; in the meantime Shane had completed Bajor using Suna as his ITPM personnel. He then proceeded to plow through my other combos at two other missions for the win. 100-0 Shane.
4(-76)

Note to self: Always have Lore in the deck! Also, have enough integrity for Alien Parasites.

Next Round was against Tom Langberg. He was playing a TGH/outpost K'chiq deck. Not much to say about this game, except that he blew up my interceptor full of my *needed* personnel, after he had rearranged the spaceline with Q, placing my Regions all around the place, it just wasn't quick enough;-) 100-47 Tom.
4(-123)

This put me near the bottom of the pack;-). Last game was against Justin (forget last name). He had a Cardasian mission-solver. I was really surprised at first that it wasn't an armada deck. In the end, he beat my deck 100-83. Final standing:7th place

Overall, it was a really fun tournament, Chris did a superb job as TD, and I have to extend special thanks to Mike Roberts who, during his Bye (5th round, I think), went to Burger King in his car, named the "Fek'lhr" ;-) and brought back burgers for the "hungry warriors" to quote Shane. Everyone had fun, as everyone there was an experienced player. We ended up with 9 people as Chris Ray had shown up after the 2nd round. Shane Wilhelmson got 1st place. Go Bajor!:-)

I can't wait to go to the Grand Slam in two weeks to play against these guys again.

Final note to self: remember to playtest deck before going to an important tournament!
