Dutch National Championship Tournament Report
by Björn Neervoort

Today's my first big tournament, with big being with more than 14 players. I don't play that often offline, in fact I've only played 3 tournies before and placed 2nd on all of them.

I was just in time along with 2 friends and some other players we met when walking to the site. A lot of people showed up. There were 28 at the Star Trek tournament and I believe 40 for Star Wars. I played a Ferengi Colony deck also in this issue.

Game 1: vs. Romulan/Cardassian Mission Solver

He told me it was his 2nd tourny and he didn't do well in the first so he wanted to do better this time. On to the game. I downloaded the usual cards and played a Q's Tent for Q's Planet first turn. Second turn I downloaded a ship and played a personnel for free. Third turn Q's Planet for a Horga'hn and a Colony in the extra turn. The rest of the game I let my Ferengi score points with colony while I delayed him with my Rogue Borg and docking procedures. He put all his personnel on a Romulan Shuttle and Loss of Orbital Stability and a Rogue Borg killed them all. Easy 100 – 0 win.
2(+100)

Game 2: vs. Bariel of Borg Dual Mission Deck

We had 2 duplicate missions and both had to exchange one. His Deliver Supplies was on the far end of the spaceline so I seeded Maglock – Cytherians there. A 3rd turn Cube adapted Maglock on the 4th turn and triggered Cytherians. My interrupts prevented him from reaching the other end of the spaceline and Loss of Orbital Stability destroyed a Borg Scout Vessel with 4 drones. I solved Runabout Search and build colony there for another 100 – 0 win.
4(+200)

Game 3: vs. Ferengi Bonus Point Deck

I had to play the guy who won the last 2 tournaments. He was playing a Ferengi deck with the Phoenix, Samuel Clemens, Kova Tholl and such cards. There we were two Ferengi decks on the first table. Quark Son of Keldar, Morn, Brunt and Nick Locarno defended my Nor. I solved Q's Planet to build a colony to score 55 points and then played the Phoenix and solved Runabout search. Unfortunately he destroyed my phoenix and played Data's Medals. He also scored 20 for Samuel Clemens and the Phoenix. Halfway through the tournament I was still undefeated!
6(+275)

Game 4: vs. Federation Mission Solver with VCM Deck

He was drawing and playing like crazy with VCM and the Traveler. He solved a mission for 35 and scored 5 for Odo's Cousin. Fortunately he put all his personnel on one ship so I could delay him with Rogue Borg and LoOS. I acquired Horga'hn, build a Colony, solved Runabout search and played the Phoenix before he could solve his 2nd mission. Close call because I drew almost no personnel.
8(+335)

Game 5: vs. another Romulan/Cardassian Mission Solver

I was really amazed about how well my deck did and I was really starting to believe in it's capabilities. There was nothing he could do to stop me from solving Runabout Search and building a colony there. It was a pretty easy win. And LoOS destroyed another Romulan Shuttle. :-) He did score Cardassia for 30 because he lost 5 to Hazardous duty.
10(+405)

Game 6: vs. Klingon Armada

When I read his PADD I saw he had lost one game and was more than 200 points behind me! I won the tournament!!! We still played the game and I think I wasn't paying attention. I played Q's Planet with no way to solve it during the same turn. So he stole my Horga'hn! During his first double turn he played an extra personnel and did nothing else. His next turn I managed to keep him at Q's Planet with Rogue Borg and LoOS. His extra turn he got only one mission away from my crew on the Nor and I had no ship there. His turn he docked at the docking ports so I could play docking procedures. I said it was just avoiding fate and it was of no use because he could take double turns. And he did take a second turn! That's right he used Horga'hn for the third time! I used Brunt to download Writ of Accountability. And that won me my last game.
12(+505)

Woohoo! Ferengi won! Eelco and Vincent, thanks for running a great tournament at a wonderful site. Special thanks to all Kedanyazins, because on Kedanya I learned how to play Star Trek on the tournament level.
