Iowa State Championship Report
by Mark Bloom

I was playing a small, tight, Bajoran "hiding" deck, with more redundancy than you can shake a stick at, and there were some pretty big sticks at the tournament. :)

This was for the State Championship, so there were 6 rounds, and of course the requisite little prize support.

Round 1 -- received a bye for a late arrival... MapQuest.com gave horrible directions :(
2(+0)

Round 2 -- ??? -- playing Ferengi
Turn 1: drop an Emissary, drop Return Orb to Bajor on him, walk outside the Chamber, attempt to secure Bajor, grabbing the Orb of Wisdom and hitting Sarjenka... netting 3 draws and 15 pts. Proceed to drop 3 personnel a turn, get a ship with Hidden Fighter, and do 3 missions rather quickly... He got 2 points with HQ: Ferengi Credit Exchange.
100+/2
4(+98)-- Second

Round 3 -- Daniel Bell (Kavok online) -- playing a big Romulan PNZ deck
This is the game I added layers of redundancy for, and I used every bit of it. Whenever a card gave me even a slight advantage, it was nullified... a small armada was camped in orbit of Bajor daring me to take off... and with my Establish Landing Protocols Ux'ed early, I was unwilling to do the taking off. After drawing another Ux, I used a Hidden Fighter to get another Landing Protocols (which luckily stuck :) I grabbed a mission giving me a 40-0 lead, and the TD announced 9 minutes remaining. Dan then took a PNZ, triggering a Borg Ship (which was Temporal Vortexed)... 55-40 him. I then got another mission 75-55, and the TD announced 2 minutes remaining. On Dan's turn, he does little, then the countdown on the BS expires. I head over to Bajor, land, and attempt it blind (no scan)... and end up hitting Unsci-Sci Methods, stopping me... with 20 seconds to go, Dan sets up an armada to ambush the Borg Ship, and announces the end of his turn, bringing the Borg Ship right to his guys, blowing it up for the win with a scant 2 seconds to go.

Dan then allows me to check out the combo that was under my other planet mission... it was a combo I could pass blindfolded... leaving me smacking my head... I could have gone after it outright, or left my ship in orbit and Distortion of Space-Time Continuum'd myself and moved in for the attempt. :( :( :(

Moral: never land a ship with less than 2 minutes remaining :(
Tactical error leaves me at a 100-75 deficit
4 (+73)

Round 4 -- ??? -- playing ??? w/ Supernova
Don't remember anything about this, except how it ended... he was way ahead, and about to win... I lost my ship and Emissary to a Borg Ship (should have left the Em behind on a landed one)... with nothing to do and no cards in play (he supernova'd Bajor), save a Traveler: Transcendence, I Devidian Doored a guy into his colony to try to minimize the damage... but couldn't draw a tent (to get the Devidian Door).
100-0 loss
4 (-27)

Round 5 -- Jeremy McAlpin (sp?) (Cyber-Garfield online) -- playing a deck loosely based on my Ferengi Solver
He starts out with a cargo run with GPL on a cloaked (w/ Engage Cloak) B'rel... I start out with the Orb of Wisdom/Sarjenka combo that I led every game with. I immediately go after missions, hitting several "you loose points" dilemmas, coming out ahead 20-25 pts/mission rather than 30-35+. Knowing that Jeremy loves THTF, I just build a Colony. About this time, he finishes his first Cargo Run, drawing 8 cards. He drops a WNOHGB, flies back off the edge over to his outpost, picks up a pile of people. The next turn, he flies over, drops half his guys on my Colony and initiates personnel battle. I overwhelm him, but due to his EP607 and replacements on the ship, retreat and go after another mission, hitting Borg Ship (again, should have left the Emissary on a different ship :()... not realizing that he could score points off my Colony, he retreats to his Nor (Doh! had an Em in hand to report to his Guest Quarters). After a few turns of reporting, he heads out towards missions, but time is called just before he could score 100.
95-60 loss
4(-42)

Round 6 -- ??? -- playing Federation No Facility q-bypass.
He seeds 29 dilemmas?!?, 1 HA... no doorways, no facilities, nothing.

I jump out to my standard 15-0 early lead, and take advantage of my Traveler:Transcendence and his Kivas Fajo--Collectors (egamI rorriM) to keep my hand full of people, while reporting 2-3 per turn. Despite being on the large side, his dilemma combos weren't too tough. I did one mission, put a colony down, sat there 2 turns, scanned Bajor, then went and scored it for the win... The way his deck worked is worth mentioning, though... he played the Office of the President, Red Alert! and reported people to the office... unfortunately for him, his hand was full of AU personnel, and his Space-Time Portals were Rakal'd to the bottom of his deck.
100-0
6(+62) -- Fourth Place.

Daniel Bell took 1st with a great deck... once again he went undefeated, although he only skunked 3 opponents compared to the usual all of them :)

My deck worked flawlessly all day, with the losses coming purely to tactical errors on my part (leave The Emissary on a SEPARATE SHIP! and NO SPACE MISSIONS with a PLANET DECK ;).
