Nevada State Championship Report
by Robert Corbett I guess I could write up a tourney report, seeing how this is the first time I have actually played in six months =) (exactly to the date). This was the Nevada State Tourney. Just a side note, I was going to play Klingon EN Armada Attack deck, but didn't want to because I might get too many timed wins, so I decided to use something just a tad bit quicker. It turned out none of my games lasted longer than 25 minutes. I played a PNZ deck. Another side note, I am currently on a five game win streak, looking to beat my old record of 7 games. (Considering I had played only 38 games I think that is pretty good). I was also trying to get my rating above 1700, because only 28 of those games are rated =). Round One: Brett Thomas (1500ish, though is probably 1600, just needs to get the games in) He was playing a Bajoran Dominion treaty deck, seeded 4 Facilities (DS9, Chamber,
The Link and a Bajoran Outpost), so I was happy I didn't decide to outpost
hunt today =). First turn I spacedoor in a ship, and redshirt with a MS. He
dies to an Edo-Borg Ship combo. His first turn, he does a lot =), but to no
avail, on my 2nd turn I play a ship, solve that mission, move to another two
card-seeded NZ, attempt. His Garak has some issues and am stooped. He plays
a few more cards free and d/l's Morn top the Bar on ds9 and next turn I
attempt the mission, hit a dead end and win in 3 turns.
Pro's: The deck worked to perfection Round Two: Chris Hines (1560, won the GS two weeks ago) First off: Chris is an established Squadron Member and has spend about $100 on trek and ended up winning the GS two weeks ago, so I'd like to congratulate him that =). In addition, he only started playing because he wanted to support my tourneys. I was the one who taught him how to play, so he is my protegee. I would want nothing more for him to beat me. But onto the game. He seeds three missions on each side on my NZ a Klingon OP on one side and a
GH on the other side, I go first and redshirt right into a Edo-Borg Ship
combo just as last game. He then plays Gowron for free with the IKC Lukura
and moves into the NZ turn one. That was a damn good move. But because the
Borg ship is approaching he has to cloak to avoid destruction, allowing me to
solve the mission when I play a ship. So it is 55-0 again. I eventually red
shirt through another mission, but he has the Lukura stopping me from
effectively patrolling the NZ, so I keep drawing for a Masaka or Kivas to try
to grab a Rift or an Isabella. About turn 9-10 I finally get one and solve
for the win before he can get a mission.
Pro's: I held out against a deck with tons of ships even with a fairly bad
draw. Round Three: Richard Melcic (1600, well on his way to 1700) He was playing a DHBC Devidian Door Lockout-Speed deck. It had 10 Devidian Doors, 7 DHBC's and a nice super crew. First turn I redshirt again, hitting a Hippo Oath and Unsci Method. The HO was immediately discarded because there were 12 space mission on the SL and I was stopped by the UM. He played a DHBC his next turn which would have caused me problems but I draw 2 STA's opening draw. So the next two turns I played the STA's and redshirted with my MS past UM. Then I hit a Barclays (which I think I discarded everyone to, but now I realized that my STA's should have lived... oops), but the mission had no seeds left. The next turn I played a ship and solved with my other MS, moving to the next mission to redshirt. Again hitting a HO (discarded) and then next a Barclay's, leaving one seed. All this time he was drawing like crazy with Kivas' and Fajo's Gallery draw and devidian dooring people in. He had 10 people on his Husnock Ship and moved to SLP and attempted blowing by the first two seeds and getting stopped by the Sci Method (one sci short). The rest of the game is sketchy. I think I STPed a ship back to hand and
reported again and solved a PNZ, but first he played R'Mor to the ship and
solved SLP for 40+5 MS points.
Pro's: DHBC's can't tough this! Round Four: Ti Velasquez (1430, but improving tremendously) He was playing a Cardi/Rommie treaty with TN and a Rommie OP. He seeded no
PNZs and I conned him into passing in the dilemma phase after he self seeded
an Interphase Generator at Alter Records and one seed at one of my missions.
He seeded a Rommie OP at one of my PNZs with AMSed Tallus and Takket. And he
had first turn. Evidentially he was hoping for a ship opening draw, but it
wouldn't have mattered, seeing how he didn't have any espionage cards and I
seeded a HQ:DM. First turn I d/led a ship and solved two missions for the
win.
Pro's: One turn win. Round Five: Stephen Jones (1500ish) Steve has been playing variants of his Klingon-Romulan Deck. One week it'll be a deck focused on solving DNA program, the next it'll be an attack deck, and the next it'll be a deck with 60 random cards =) (j/k). But I taught Steve how to play, so I am trying to help him improve his decks. Though three weeks ago he almost won a tourney. This time he was playing an attack variant with no treaty. (I think I made him afraid of the Devil when I showed him the 5 I own =)) First turn I redshirted again with one of my MS and Hit a Edo-Cytherians combo, losing the points and returning my ship to hand. Next turn I replayed the ship, attempted with the other MS and hit a Borg Cube (not a bad combo). But no seeds were left, and I had no cards other than my OP's on table. Turn three and four I play leadership and a ship and solve for 55 (I had a MS) and then moved to the next mission, hitting again and Edo-Cytherians, returning my ship to hand then redshirting the Borg Cube. On his turn he was playing cards for free and moved to a Bat'leth Tourney and attempted hitting a Edo probe-In the pale moonlight-Beserk Chang and getting stopped. He eventually solved the mission for 15 total. Then he had the delightful idea of wormholing his ship to my OP mission. I
isabella'd him and he returned his ship to hand, making his hand 20 or so
cards. I then Kivased him and d/led with IOAG my Scorched Hand to make him
put most of his personnel to the bottom of his draw deck. Then I eventually found a leader and solved my mission for the win.
Pro's: The IOAG trick! Well I won the NV championship with Richard taking 2nd with 7(263). Here are the results and decks:
As for timed and full wins, here is the break down:
While there weren't a lot of timed wins, the majority of games lasted between 50 minutes and an hour. Thanx for reading this if you really still are, Robert Corbett
