Pre-Deciphercon Tournament Report
by Spock

Good competition at today's (10/1) tournament…most of the top players in the region were there.  This tournament report was delayed a week so as not to give away possible Deciphercon decks.  My deck, which I put together on Friday, is an Orb of Wisdom deck…download Kira, Odo, and another security with Defend Homeworld, QIR, and Assign Support Personnel, then draw cards with Orb Processing and Morn in the bar, playing them free with the Orb and the CoM.  If I get a tent but not a ROtB, I tent for the ROtB and  use Homefront to download Odo, since I lose my card draw anyway.  I seed Homefront in order to keep my opponent from tripping the Orb/Sarjenka.  CNE + Bajor + Return Orb + Sarjenka + BPD under CNE + Kivas Fajo = 100 points for the win.  There's also a Phoenix in the tent, and I can solve any of the missions (2 of them with Kira alone)

Game 1: vs Josh Colwell
I generally do horribly first round, and of course I've never played this deck before…on the other hand, I've only lost to Josh in constructed once before.  I get a horrible draw, so I just download Morn, then sit back and draw cards.  Josh has a Klingon AMS/High Council deck, if I recall correctly, with K'chiq for STAs.  Eventually I'm able to do a Return Orb and speed up.  Meanwhile, Josh solves a mission.  I get a mission as well, but then head for another.  I don't have duplicate requirements for CNE and I do have them for another mission, so I head for it.  Time is about to run out, and after Josh's Q-Flash messed me up before, I'm not sure I'll be able to solve a mission this turn, so I send a 2-man crew to hit BPD at CNE.  Then I attempt the other mission…get through the last dilemma just as time is called.  Then I realize that between his Q-cards (Odo is under Q's Planet, after a Q-type android) and splitting my people, I'm one security short. :-p  All I need to do is pick up my other security to win, but…time's up!
Score: 0 (-14)

Game 2: vs Colby Chavez
He's got a Federation AMS VCM deck.  I left out It's Only A Game, and I don't dare attack on Earth while he has a HA.  He solves a mission, for 35 + 10 AMS + 10 from a self-seeded BPD, then his supercrew'd Thunderchild hits a Make Us Go / Birth of Junior / Cytherians combo.  I prepare to kill his ship; he rifts it so I discard STP to get rid of the rift, after which he discards a STP to return it to his hand.  I solve a mission, but get hung up on Dead End at the second due to losing 16 to a Higher the Fewer, so I head for mission 3.  We're running out of time, but I can't seem to get him to hurry up…time is called when I'm sorting through my personnel for Chula: the lights (who was picked was immaterial, since I had several times the requirements for both missions).  Another 30 seconds and I'd have solved the two missions for the win…as it is, he gets a timed win by 11. :-p  30 seconds more, or a few less (so I didn't hit the HtF)….can you believe my timing? ;-p
Score: 0 (-11)  Total: 0 (-25)

Game 3: vs Neil Kirby
He has a Romulan Stop Kirk Contact deck, so Morn exchanges his latinum for a medical tricorder.  Once he gets Barry Waddle back in time and downloads a tribble bomb, I wormhole/STP a ship to the past, carry all the tribbles aboard, and deactivate the bomb.  I solve CNE, bringing me to 60 points.  He attempts a mission, gets stopped; he tries to distortion, but I suspend play with QtR to download Temporal Vortex. Next turn, I cargo bay dl Kivas Fajo, solve Bajor to bring me up to 95, then walk Kivas over to the orb for the win.
Score: 2 (+100)  Total: 2 (+75)

Game 4: vs Brad Defruiter
Brad has a Romulan AMS, 2-mission-win deck.  After realizing he isn't playing PNZ, I notice that one of his missions is ideal for an AMS deck: 40 points + lots of requirements.  So, I seed Maglock/Dead End there. We start…first turn, Brad plays Q's Planet.  second turn, Brad discards Defend Homeworld for Suna, uses Assign Support Personnel for Tomalak, and spacedoor's a D'deridex.  Then he uses Make It So for a Ready Room Door for a Senior Staff Meeting, getting rid of my Maglock, but DE stops him.  I have my 15 and I'm building a crew.  He gets stopped at the mission next door, so I try flying over to kill somebody, after playing a Bajoran Disruptor Rifle, but he wormholes me to the gamma quad.  I need the people on the ship, so I pick it up, although I know he'll discard a QtR to get scorched hand.  Brad passes a mission, bringing him up to 45.  I don't have enough personnel to split up, so I take my chances with Bajor…Altonian Brain Teaser / Dead End. :-p  ATB nullifies my 15 points, and on his turn, Brad plays the Phoenix, ignores my Dead End, and solves that mission and Q's Planet for the win.  It wasn't until afterwards that I realized I should have tented for a Reaction Control Thrusters (I think I had a tent in my hand and 2 engineer, though I'm not completely sure) to move DS9 over to CNE, rather than risking the Bajor attempt.
Score: 0 (-100)  Total: 2 (-25)

I really wish we could have longer games…except for my last game, I never finished in under 55 minutes.  I'm afraid I'm going to have to give up on the Bajorans for now, and start building my decks in advance…it's been over 5 months since I won a Star Trek tournament, so I'll go back to an affiliation I'm comfortable with for a while.
