Tournament Report, Standard Constructed: July 22, 2001
by William Springer

Ahh, two Star Trek tournaments in one weekend! :-)  My throw-together Kazon/Vidiian deck unexpectedly took 2nd out of 16 players yesterday, so I played it again today.

Game 1: vs Bryce Stevenson
Bryce used a AQ/GQ/MQ deck with the usual ton of TE downloads…what I wouldn't give to have a containment field ;-)  I got a ton of personnel out myself and started on missions. After solving 2, I picked the wrong one to attempt and a Cytherians slowed me down enough for him to solve a mission for 30.

Game 2: vs Kate DeStephen
Yay, Kate's back! ;-)  Anyway, she's playing an all-Alpha Romulan deck with, it seems, FLI/Scow under all of my missions.  I lose a few people to the FLI (they went to the quarantined DQ planet) and got stopped by a lack of astrophysics, totally forgetting the R'Mor in my tent :-p.  I make it up to 60 (including -5 from Quinn);  my first mission, worth 40, is totally cleared out (Dead End on it) but I have no range.  Her turn, Kate clears out another mission and it looks like she wins…but her astrophysics was relocated by MY scow combo!  My turn, I use a few ships to ferry my people across the DQ spaceline and solve the last mission for the win.  100-60

Game 3: vs Tim Bilobran
When we played yesterday, the only reason I didn't commandeer Voyager first turn was I left my Commandeer Ship at home :-(.  We both agree that if I win the flip, I win the game, since he has no way to keep me from commandeering Voyager and no way to win without it, as his only other ship is the Delta Flyer (and I'll blow it up as soon as I get the chance)  He wins the flip, though, and does the classic Federation DQ fast start.  We have some mission duplication so we're both being pretty careful.  I commandeer a Vidiian Ship he leaves empty and harvest one of his people to bring myself to 30, while he solves a mission for 45.  I get stopped by Dead End at my primary mission, then do something totally stupid: I attempt a space mission with everyone :-p  20 people head off to find Cytherians and he swoops in and solves the mission for 55 points and the win, 100-30.

Game 4: vs Joe Helfrich
This should have been an easy game, since I went first and he seeded an undocked Voyager…but I stupidly played my free Vidiian to the wrong outpost and didn't have the computer skill to use to commandeer his ship. :-p  He does the fast start, then goes after his 2 copies of Catalog Phenomena, but can't get past my dilemmas at either.  I bring over the big Vidiian ship and download the Claw, harvest Seven of Nine for organs and points, then battle to wipe out most of his people.  On his turn he downloads STP with TMP and returns Voyager to his hand.  Next turn he drops Voyager with crew at the array, but for some reason he leaves it there…so on my turn I drop a Kazon shuttle with crew, ram Voyager, and battle, killing 2 of the 3 people aboard.  He abandons ship and I commandeer for another 20 points, at which he downloads Intermix Ratio so we're tied 0-0.  I solve his 2 Catalog Phenomenas for 35 points each with AMS bonus, bringing me to 95 points since I Quinned his Defiant Dedication Plaque earlier.  He ran his people into my dilemmas, so I can't harvest them.  I head over to another mission and work my way through his dilemmas (DQ people really kill dilemmas) but I don't get to solve as his MLI/Plague Ship combo gives me the last 5 points.  100-0
Side note: I had no tents in the deck (just 13 downloadable cards in the tent, which is unusual for me - I usually just stock "what if" cards like Reflection Therapy there) and by the end of the game, I had completely emptied my tent!
