Tournament Report: Iowa Standard Constructed
by Lee ‘Q son of Q’ Clarke

I went into this regular monthly tournament undecided on which deck I was going to play. I had a Borg Assimilation deck (sounds really newbie-ish and corny, but it was actually quite good and thoroughly playtested) and a Bajoran/Cardassian Rogue Borg deck.  I thought the Baj/Car deck was quite capable of bringing down most decks from the local meta even if they had Reactor Overload.
After managing to trade for another queen before hand, I decided to play the Borg deck.
The turnout for this tournament was pretty low, however the tournament foils (DOSTC and Chula: the Dice) were still up for grabs.

Game 1  Borg 111 card monstrosity vs Scott (Klingon)
Scott starts out kinda slow until he gets his Red Alert and Traveler out (around 4th turn), however I got an excellent draw and had a staffed cube (w/ the queen) at his outpost on the 2nd turn. I then went on to assimilate about 8 of his people (including a counterpart). Unfortunately for Scott, he lost most of his remaining people to a Hazardous Duty – Borg Ship combo. I then went on to complete an Assimilate Planet and Establish Gateway on two of his missions.

FW 2 (+100) cumulative 2 (+100)

Game 2 Borg thingy vs Robert (Bajoran Pire for Hire)
Robert did a pretty standard start with Morn at the bar and Return Orb to Bajor on Kira for a first turn Orb. I also started out well, getting a cube to Bajor (where DS9 and Chamber of Ministers were) on about the 2nd turn. He continues to get out a lot of people, however an Assimilate Counterpart and 3 Talon Drones later, most of his people are now serving me. I then go on to Assimilate Bajor, taking away all of his facilities. He slows me down with a Q’s Planet, but I complete a couple more objectives on his missions for the win.

FW 2 (+100) cumulative 4 (+200)

Game 3 Borg whatdyacallit vs Bernie (Romulan PNZx6)
I was kinda prepared for PNZ, and I was pretty confident I could get a Cube into the Neutral Zone turn 1, however things would turn out differently. Bernie got off to a very quick start, he attempted first turn with about 7 people and went through a Q-Flash and Chula: the Chandra to get stopped at a Friendly Fire. On my turn, I attempt to get the cube out, except my hand just wasn’t good enough and Bernie seemed to have all the answers. I didn’t draw a queen until about the 2nd turn and when I tried to Awaken the drones I needed he responded with a barrage of amandas. As a result of this it wasn’t till my third turn (when the Friendly Fire had gone and he had solved his first PNZ) that I was able to enter the Alpha Quadrant. After I got into the Alpha Quadrant and downloaded an AU Door to my hand, there was nothing he could do. I solved one Establish Gateway on a PNZ but I was too afraid he’d win with a feedback surge if I did another one so I went on to solve (with a different cube) three more objectives in the Delta Quadrant. At one stage I also lowered his score with an Oof!.

FW 2 (+55) cumulative 6 (+255)

Lunch break – wooohooo!
A plate of chips contains all the essential food groups – Sauce, Salt, Grease, Fat and ...Chips.

Game 4 Borg Deck of Doom vs (SORRY? – I forget your name)’s Klingon Alpha Deck
This game was VERY similar to the first one except that I took too long doing objectives and ended up with a timed win by about 70.

TW 1 (+70?) cumulative 7 (+325?)

Game 5 We are the Borg vs Adam (Romulan/Klingon Guardian of Forever)
I started off as usual, getting a Cube out to the Alpha on about the 2nd turn and he started off sending back a group of Archaeology/Anthropology people to 2267. He’d only played one GoF when I assimilated Historical Research (Friendly Fire prevented him from doing it – however it doesn’t stop the Borg from probing). He was very hesitant from there on. I’d playtested with him a lot the week before and he knew that if he had a large group of people ANYWHERE I’d assimilate them. I went on to assimilate most of the Blood Oath group after a Hazardous Duty stopped them and completed a couple of objectives in the Delta Quadrant for the win.

FW 2 (+100) cumulative 9 (+425?)

Game 6 – I get the bye
Well I don’t know how that happened, but oh well, it guarantees me a victory.

Well I finish the tournament on top and receive a DoSTC tournament foil – hopefully I can trade that for a bunch of RefIII when that releases. I was also able to trade for a Reginald Barclay (TB) leaving me with only one card to complete my Borg set.

Now for the traditional………..Props and Slops!

Props
Adam, for trading me Reg
Everyone I played, for giving me some GREAT games
Robert, for trading me another Borg Queen
Decktech and WNOHGB, for helping heaps with the playing communities of both ST and SW

Slops

That’s about it
