Tournament Report: Colorado Standard Constructed
by William Springer

Well, I didn't really get a chance to do much deckbuilding this week, so an hour before the tournament I grabbed a bunch of cards and threw together a deck.  I'm not sure how many cards there were, but the draw deck was about 2 inches…  It was DQ Fed/Vid with Kirk running around on the ISS Enterprise; if I got out Scott as well that would make the ship 8-11-11 with Captain's Log from my seeded Make It So.  I used a Mirror Terok Nor with guest quarters and threw in a bunch of events and interrupts; unfortunately I was not able to find any wormholes so I had to make do with Quantum Slipstream Drive.

Game 1: vs Mark Ponting (The Maker - JCM)
He was playing DQ as well, and we both spent some time building up at our respective outposts, he with Ancestral Vision and the Array, me with the Vision and shopping.  I got the Enterprise over near his outpost, and as it happened, I drew the rogue borg I'd thrown into my deck, so I used that to stop him for a turn and attacked.  Drew a toff, so after he got his card play I toffed it back.  He made the mistake of DQSSing instead of beaming his people down to Liberation or docking, so I borged him again and then on my turn I blew up his ship.  After that I cleared out my OP mission for 55, and was down to the last dilemma under my second mission when time was called.  1 (+55)

Game 2: vs John Bergman  (Colorado State Champion)
Uh-oh ;-)  Before we start I make John promise that I'll get at least one turn. ;-)  He's playing a Rommie AMS deck, and for once he doesn't try to blow up my stuff.  Unfortunately, I never get a QSD to bring Kirk over to kill his stuff.  He gets through one mission with just 5 people; second mission he has more so I swap in a flash.  My Land Eel killed off who he needed to get past the last dilemma, but having scanned after the first attempt he knows what he needs and goes for it.  The mission shoves him up to 95.  After that he heads for my Q's Planet to pick up Data and Picard, who were relocated with Q-Type Android, and manages to forget that I put Q's Vicious Animal Things there after he failed it the first time :-).  Anyway, he solves that mission and it's my turn.  I clear out my OP mission except for one dilemma…and trip the Sheliak, which, on the short DQ spaceline (4 missions), will arrive at the end of the turn.  I send down one personnel to redshirt the last dilemma…and it turns out to be a wall that I can't pass without that one personnel :-p.  I send everyone else off to another mission where they run into a dead end, and John wins on his turn.  1 (-45)

Game 3: vs Nathaniel White (Ensign Red Shirt)
Nathan's been telling me how well his new deck gets out ships, and he was right.  Unfortunately, with Kirk running around killing people with the Tantalus field, ships were soon ALL he had :-).  I believe at the end of the game he had out 6 ships and no people.  I solved my OP mission, then left my specialists behind to clear out another…but I accidentally included the dilemma requirements, blew through his dilemmas, and solved for 95. :-p  Headed for another mission and solved for 65, bringing the score to 160-0.  3 (+55)

Game 4: vs Brad DeFruiter (Sirna Kolrami)
His spaceline is really weird…4 quadrants!  I think he might be playing Borg but I'm not really sure; he has 3 space and 3 30-point planets.  He IS playing Borg, and on his first turn he drops FC Queen free to the Unimatrix, spends a few minutes downloading, then runs into a self-seeded Ooby Dooby for lots of draws.  My OoM restricts the downloading…though not much since he draws 5 Awakens ;-p.  He soon completes the Salvage Starship and picks up Tommie of Borg and a Horga'Hn.  I solve my OP mission for 45, putting me briefly in the lead.  He travels over to the AQ and does another Salvage for 30 more, putting him up 60-30.  I head over the my next mission and hit..Dead End :-p.  5 more points and I'd have over 100…  Anyway, we're about out of time so I end my turn and he goes for Assimilate Homeworld.   Probe, good, and he's up 100-45; I have Q's Planet out so he gets a timed win.  3 (0)

Not one of my better tournaments - I ended up with a pretty low score - but I did better than expected given the rather….last-minute…nature of my deck.  Brad wins, of course, with 7 (+285), and everyone gets some packs of Reflections.

I'm looking forward to trying out the new Borg and Hirogen cards; the only trouble is trading for the cards I need ;-p
