Tournament Report: Iowa Standard Constructed
by Mark Bloom

Tounament date: 13 October 2001
Location: Mayhem Des Moines, Clive IA
Number of players: 8
Reported by: Mark 'Nermal' Bloom

Round 1: Pamela

Pamela was playing a Kazon/Federation deck with massive draws through Ancestral Vision/Chakotay and The Traveler: Transcendence. She then got lots of plays with War Council and the Kazon Collective.  We both had problems with each other's dilemmas. She ended up with 95 points and I with 30.

Modified Loss-- 0 (-65)

Round 2: Cory

Cory also had a Kazon/Federation deck, but without the massive draw/play features of Pamela's. He was also spread out with an outpost on each end of the spaceline, with my one outpost near the center. He used his AMS at one outpost, with his other fast start cards going to the other. After playing Janeway as his card play, he attempts a mission... Hide & Seek stops one person, Impressive Trophies captures Janeway, and a Cardassian Trap gets the other. I grab a ship and a few people and head down to grab the guys. A couple of turns later, he attempts his other outpost mission, only to be stopped on the planet. I toss Rituals of the Hunt on The Artificial Intelligence, and play another ship and a few more people. I run down and grab the AI. Well, you get the picture. I eventually start going through missions, and end up completing 2 missions for 60 points, and slaughtering captives for 46. He managed to get through one of his outpost missions. :)

Full Win-- 2 (0)

Round 3: Chris

Chris was playing a Federation Alpha-Quad deck. I'd played against this deck before and knew speed was what was needed to win. Knowing this, I got a ship and an alpha out quickly and redshirted my outpost mission. I got through a dilemma or two, then lost my alpha. Next turn I played Bariel and an alpha and attempted again, this time with everyone. When faced with a dilemma that would kill one guy randomly, I immediately special downloaded Borg Nanoprobes, then Bariel was chosen (guess I'm psychic :). I went over and blew through his combo next door with no major losses. Up 60-0, I move back to my Outpost and end my turn. He plays a bunch of people through his Red Alert!, but thankfully, has no ship :). On my next turn, I download another ship, barely staff both of them, and move over to Corner Enemy Ship. and attempt. His combo is Borg Ship (I Q the Ref for Temporal Vortex)/The Weak Will Perish (my psychic abilities pay off!)/some random killer which I cannot remember. The killer kills one of my mission requirements, so I end my turn. During his turn, I realize that I had duplicates of that requirement
(Doh!), but thankfully he does just about nothing. On my turn, I win, 100-0.

Full Win-- 4 (+100)... second place

Round 4: RJ

RJ was playing a Hirogen/Lost Borg deck. His missions end up mostly on one end of the spaceline, with mine on the other, including my 3 Secure Stations all lined up nice and neat in a row. We duplicated Hunt Alien, which was just to my right of the secure stations, right about in the middle of the spaceline. This is really only important
because of what did (or rather didn't) happen during the seed phase. Or more specifically during the Dilemma Phase... which we happened to skip. I happened to draw Karon (Alpha, can meet nearly all requirements on Hunt Alien). and proceeded to pull fast start cards, Karon for free, and dl a ship. needless to say, I went up 90-0 before he took a turn. Then RJ used his fast start cards and downloaded a ship, scoring 70 points. On my turn, I played Bariel, special downloaded the Borg Nanoprobes and won the game on Hunt Alien. 120-70.

Full Win-- 6 (+130)

Unfortunately (for me), that wasn't enough of a differential to claim a tournament victory away from RJ. The final standings were:

1. RJ 6 (+200ish)
2. Me 6 (+130)
...
4. Jennie Bloom aka Jenice 4 (+75ish)
...

Anyway, for our $10, Jennie and I got 2 packs of Reflections, 2 packs of Tribbles, and 2 packs of The Borg as well as The Week Will Perish and The Clown: My Festival.

See the decklist!
