Colorado Chase the Can
by William "Spock" Springer
Cool….two Star Trek Chase the Can events this weekend! Finished
up my finals early
this week, but I couldn't seem to get going on a deck; finally, the
night before the tournament, I loaded WNOHGB and brought up the decklist
for the Bajoran deck I built for the 2000 State Championships. Spent
half an hour finding my Cargo Bay, updated it for the new sets, and was
ready to go. Unfortunately, since I was still finishing it right
up to when it was time to leave, I left out a few things I had planned
to include, such as Mirror Image, Reflection Therapy, Operate Wormhole
Relays, and a ship with a holodeck. :-p
So, I get to the store and get my Decipher's Best stickers….I'm the
only qualifier there so Jefferson just gives me the stickers to put on
my cans as I win them.
Game 1: vs Rob Lundquist
He's playing an interesting War Council deck; he wins the flip and
drops most of his hand on the first turn. Everybody gets on a Romulan
Scout vessel and he moves over and solves a mission. Unfortunately
for him, he decided to give me his ship for A Fast Ship Would Be Nice,
and I'm able to bring over some people and (with the +2 from Shakaar) wipe
out half his away team before he can get another ship out. First
turn I got Orb of Wisdom / Sarjenka at Bajor (3-person AT so as to be safe
from Villagers with Torches); I scanned CNE but found it had a Radioactive
Garbage Scow, which I couldn't get past due to the lack of a tractor beam.
Anyway, I solved Bajor, but time was called before I could do another mission.
Win by 15. 1 (+15)
Game 2: vs Katherine Morel
She's using a Equinox Home Away From Home deck, which she said was
basically a warp speed deck with some extra cards thrown in. She
solves one mission - I forgot which - but I then return both the Orb of
Wisdom from Bajor and the Orb of Prophency and Change from CNE for 25 (with
Sarjenka), solve the two missions for another 70, and Kivas Fajo gives
me another 10 to give me the win 105-35. 3 (+80)
Game 3: vs Nathan Lundquist
I don't know why, but I have the most horrible luck against Nathan;
he's won our last three games. He tried to outseed me, but I get
my orbs in last, and pick up the Orb of Wisdom first turn again.
Unfortunately, I don't have my OWR, and he wormholes me to the mirror quad
every time I try to move. :-p I do manage to scan Bajor, but he has
both Garbage Scow and Dead End there…I'm not solving that mission!
I get the Emissary to another mission and start reporting cards there;
when I attempt, though, Strict Dress Code takes him out, leaving me without
the mission requirements, and then Q rearranges the spaceline. He
amasses a Federation supercrew and redshirts through two missions, then
heads for a third…where I have Dead End. :-p Somehow it doesn't occur
to me that this would be a good time to swap in a flash with Beware of
Q - !! - and he wins 100-15. 3 (-5)
Game 4: vs Stevon Sherry
I think he's a new player…anyway, he's playing a standard Establish
Gateway in the Delta Quad deck. This is the first game that I don't
get a HQ: Return Orb to Bajor either in my opening draw or after Masakaing,
so we're both playing slowly, me holding services for 1 card and him working
through my dilemmas. Eventually I pick up the Orb of Wisdom for 15
and he establishes his first gateway. I grab a second mission, while
he clears out another space, only to be sent on a Cytherians trip.
I head for another mission and am resolving the last dilemmas when time
is called; 30 seconds more and I would have had it. :-p Win by 65;
final score 4 (+60).
Anyway, after the timed wins, I end up 5th of 12, but I get 15 packs
of Holodeck Adventures…and I also won the random selection for a Chula:
the Dice foil! :-)
Meant to go to a YJ tourny tonight, but the weather was too bad…will
just have to wait for the HA prerelease tomorrow! :-)
