Gen Con Continental Championships Day 1
by Lee Sneathen Well around 40 or so people have accumulated in Milwaukee, WI to try
at their attempts on making it to day 2 and then to become the Continental
Champion. I showed up with the intent on making it to day 2 as did
several other people form our state, Michigan, Mike Mannino, Jon Sneathen,
Scott Roszkowski and Matt King. I had decided the previous day to
use my armada deck as my best chances on making day 2. Well I have had
deck list troubles the weeks before at the Detroit open so here I had several
people check and double check my list the day before the beginning of continentals,
so now on with the games.
Game 1 vs. John Bergman Well lucky me I have to face off my first game verses a PNZ deck of
all things. Well the PNZ deck I faced was ‘ready’ for my scows but not
my battle, he goes first hits a scow, and next turn tows it away.
Now on my second turn I make a visit to the PNZ and said hello to his only
ship with a tractor beam, his one and only D’deridex and blew it away.
On the 2 following turns his neutral outpost visited the graveyard, and
I continued to waltz on down the PNZ at my leisure making my next visit
at his Romulan outpost. After he had been cleaned out of his neutral
zone, I went over and completed 2 easy PNZs for the win. 100-0.
Game 2 vs. someone I forgot the name Well I’m gone from one game vs. a ‘cheese deck’ to another ‘cheese deck’.
This time its not PNZ but good ole Ferangi/dual icon/SSM/Ajur/Boratus,
all I can say is fun, fun, fun… Well off he went turn 1 Ajuring a
mission and then SSMing it also, well lucky for him only the scow stayed,
and he was stopped dead in his tracks. My turn I swooped on in and
blew his ship sky high. Several attempts were made by the opponent
to tow the scow away but I just turned around and towed it back.
Soon the outpost was missing and then the head quarters soon followed,
all his personal couldn’t have been lonely they were all together in the
discard pile. I pull this one off 100-0.
Game 3 vs. Kris Sonteby This has to have been my favorite game of all weekend, playing against
Kris was fun even though I didn’t get the desired results from the end
of the game. I have been waiting to play this game ever since the
Detroit Open, but now here we are his armada vs. mine. Well things
start off badly for me, I get a horrible opening hand, use a Q the Referee
to swap up my hand, not much better, so I make the best of it. I
get 2 ships staffed quickly and try to off his outpost before he can make
use of it, I don’t get very far as my tactic is nullified and I buried
my RRD somewhere in the process. Well more of my stuff blew up than
his, and while I tried to rebuild he solved 2 missions for the win, 0-100.
Game 4 vs. Dave Nix Dave and I seem to play every time in a tournament now, seems odd, but
anyways. I get him to hide on a planet and I just build up while
he does. I get him to try and go early on but I get one or two of
his ships in the process. Dave is dead-ended on the planet he is
landed on, and seems in trouble. So he takes off in one last desperate
attempt and goes for broke, he attempts a mission expecting a scow and
gets it, haves the Voyager attempt and then is stopped by my cytherians.
Dave tries distortioning out of trouble but I vortex the distortion.
On my turn I systematically blow Dave’s ships and people up, and sending
them on a vacation to the discard pile. I get off 3 missions for
the win, 100-0.
Game 5 vs. Mike Mannino Well well well, I get to play Mike after all, since I helped him build
his deck the day before and all doesn’t seem well for Mike. I drop
a dead end where it is needed and just wait to blow him up. But out
of the gate Mike uses my caretaker’s array to drop a ship and attempt one
of my missions where he has a flute awaiting. But I have a little
surprise for him, fairplay. Well I quickly blow up the little ship
that tried to get away and away it went. Back in the alpha quadrant
Mike is busy reporting personal as fast as he can before I can get to him,
by the time I do he has several people sitting on the planet laughing at
me. So I blow all his facilities up and then return to the delta
quadrant for some mission solving. All this time he has a cloaked Defiant
sitting in the delta quadrant waiting for something. I attempt a
mission and hit the worst dilemma in the world and get stopped by it, palukoo.
Then out of the blue Mike rebuilds his outpost and then attempts a mission
and solves it for 30. I think nothing of it and then win shortly after,
100-30.
Game 6 vs. Ashlin Christensen-Szalansk Ashlin is playing a very fast Vidiian deck, he drops people extremely
fast and drops his large ships in defense, using DQSS for draws and plays.
Ashlin quickly accumulates 50 points off one mission before I can blow
up his ships and outposts. This is where he makes a critical mistake,
he uses DQSS to build an outpost and then play a ship, and then he beams
everyone up to the outpost and ends his turn. On my turn I played
more ships and people and then wormholed over and direct hit his outpost
with everyone aboard killing all. It was easy cruising after that, solving
3 missions for the win, 100-50.
So I ended up finishing 1st for day one! Now all that is left is surviving day 2 to become the continental champion! (Which didn’t happen by the way) Comments? Post on the New WNOHGB BBS! |
