Spock's Timing Tricks

Circumventing the Ketracel Countdown

One of the typical Dominion player's biggest headaches is dealing with the Ketracel White. Without it, all but one of the Jem'Hadar are off limits. With it, you have to return to the outpost every few turns for a reset, or risk your Jemmies going berserk from white deprivation.

What if you could have the advantages of the Jem'Hadar, without having to worry about the white countdown? When I decided to play Dominion for the first time, it occurred to me: due to the timing rules, you can use your white without using it up! I immediately build a 70+ card Dominion deck, took it to a tournament the next day, and lost horribly... but it was fun keeping my Dominion away teams running around all game without needing to reset the white!

NOTE: Decipher has just closed this rules loophole; see the end of the article for details. This method is no longer valid.

Take a close look at the rules for Ketracel White. Like any other card with a countdown box, it counts down at the end of each of your turns - but only if white-addicted Jem'Hadar are present. However, your Jemmies only go berserk if there is no white present at the beginning of your turn.

Getting the picture now? Here's how to set it up.

  1. At the end of your turn, your personnel should be at a planet location.
  2. Form two away teams. One should contain all the Jem'Hadar, the other contains all the white.
  3. You decide what order end-of-turn effects happen in, so let the white countdown first. It won't, because there are no white-addicted personnel present. Then let the away teams merge into one.
  4. At the beginning of your next turn, all of your Jem'Hadar are present with the white, so they don't go berserk, even though they never used it!

IMPORTANT: Decipher has just decided, although it wasn't in the CR Update, that Away Teams merge before end-of-turn actions, so this no longer works. It was fun while it lasted! ;-)
