Spock's Strategy Quiz
by William Springer

How Well Do You Know Your STCCG Strategy?

  1. Your opponent is playing Dominion. He has one ship in the Alpha Quadrant, which is next to your outpost. You know that if you report anyone to the outpost, he will beam aboard and kill that person. Every turn, he attacks the outpost, even though he has no way to damage it. Why?

  2. It is the third game of the tournament. You have destroyed all of your opponent's facilities. She has drawn her entire deck, but has no place to play her ships and personnel. She begins playing her Kivas Fajos on you, letting you draw cards. Why?

  3. Your ship is under the influence of Cytherians. It reaches the end of the spaceline, but you score no points. Why? (name 2 possible reasons)

  4. All of your opponent's personnel are at his outpost, except for Major Rakal, who is on a Romulan Shuttle at the end of the spaceline due to Cytherians. Your opponent puts all of the personnel at his outpost on a ship, undocked, and attempts the mission. Having only one Biology, everyone dies to an Aphasia Device / TPS combo. He takes another action and then ends his turn. On his next turn, he plays Roga Danar to his outpost, beams him to a ship, and attempts the mission. He cures Aphasia Device, passes TPS for 5 points, and solves the mission. How?

Answers:

  1. He is using the 34th Rule of Acquisition: War is good for business. Every time he attacks your ship, he draws two cards, many of which he is then able to play for free, often drawing more cards in the process.

  2. She is hoping you will run out of cards, ending the game and increasing her differential.

  3. Either you are playing Borg, or you have reached the wrong end of the spaceline. (either you are travelling off the end with The Traveler or WNOHGB, or you were wormholed). Altonian Brain Teaser would still let you score the points, they simply wouldn't count towards winning.

  4. After losing all of his personnel at his outpost mission, he attempted the mission Major Rakal was at. She hit a Temporal Causality Loop, which undid his last two actions. As those actions were the two mission attempts, they were undone, and everyone came back to life.
