TwT Card Review #3 - The Centurion
by Sergei Rachmaninoff

Here's the third review, not as lengthy as the last one:

The Centurion (#97, R)
"Senior advisor and science officer aboard Gal Gath'thong during 2266 Neutral Zone incursion. Cautioned Keras to proceed carefully against the starship Enterprise."
Icons: Command, Alternate Universe, Trouble with Tribbles, Original Series
Classification: SCIENCE
- Exobiology - Stellar Cartography - Honor
- Other Romulans at this location are attributes all +1.
RANGE 7 WEAPONS 8 SHIELDS 5

As with the others, the format I'll be using is one of analyzing each aspect of the card, providing comments on each of its various facets.

Where to start on this guy? It's hard to say, as he doesn't really have any qualities that make him stand out above the rest of the crowd... a lot of strengths, but nothing that makes you say "wow" like McCoy's special skill or the Dominion Battleship's attributes. I'll start with his special skill that raises Romulan attributes, as that's the most noticeable thing on the card. First, my overall opinion on the attribute boost: it's a nice side effect, but I wouldn't include The Centurion just for it. The first dilemma that comes to mind is Dal'Rok, for which his special skill would help out a lot... of course, a good-sized crew can pass one of those pretty easily anyway. He would be useful for quickly nullifying Dal'Roks your opponent trips at your missions, though. The INTEGRITY increase is most useful for passing Firestorms... of course, I've never seen one of those outside of sealed deck. Nevertheless, it boosts almost all Romulans above the critical 5 INTEGRITY mark, and as a result is much, much better than Kukalaka, which only provides INTEGRITY and a so-so magic bullet, whereas The Centurion is versatile, providing attributes, staffing, skills, and a classification in addition to the Firestorm protection. Of course, this guy doesn't affect your Non-Aligned personnel in this respect, but many of the better ones are already protected (Galen, Roga Danar, Soong-type Android) or are beyond hope of being saved by raising INTEGRITY (Lore, Vekor). Suna's the only one I can think of that's in widespread use for Romulans that would be saved by Kukalaka. It also helps out a little bit with Qs (I'd still recommend Q2s for Romulans, though), or provides extra INTEGRITY after a Chula: the Chandra/Alien Parasites combo. The CUNNING boost? Not too much that extra CUNNING does. (There's a reason people don't use the CUNNING-boosting PADDs) In fact, if all you need is total CUNNING, until you have nine personnel out, 10 and 01 will give you the same or more. Individual CUNNING isn't called for too much, except for Framed for Murder and Common Thief. Framed for Murder is probably passed by Vreenak or Cretak, though, and the only Romulan who could conceivably pass F4M with this extra would be Tamarith with another Romulan underground member, which I don't see happening in too many decks. Common Thief is a very good use though, as it essentially restricts the selection to those with CUNNING+STRENGTH < 13, but again your Non-Aligned aren't protected. Also, neither is The Centurion himself, so if you're expecting multiple Common Thieves, leave him out of the mission attempt: he'll still give the bonus, but can't be targeted. The STRENGTH bonus is just that -- a bonus, nice to have, but not the primary reason to use this card. In any decent-sized crew, a Romulan Disruptor Rifle would do you much better: 1 extra point isn't going to protect you from personnel battle decks. It might save one or two personnel, but not much beyond that. Hand weapons are a much better bet for defense and other individual STRENGTH-enhancers. But, it all comes wrapped in with the increases in other attributes and the other benefits all personnel provide, so it's much more broad in terms of its use.

The next thing that I'll look at are the regular skills, because that's probably the most important factor for this card, considering nothing else is stellar (the special skill is good, but not *that* good). He's got a decent set of dilemma-busting skills, usable for both planets and space. At one time, I would have thought the combination of a primarily planet-based skill (Exobiology) and a space one (Stellar Cartography) to be weaker (a la Taitt), because even with Balancing Act, players focused on either planet missions or space missions. However, with a quick QtR for The Big Picture, it's a good idea to be equally prepared (or more equal than before) for both. It still is a small liability IMHO, (I think the card would be stronger if he had, say, Geology instead of Stellar Cartography or Astrophysics/Navigation in lieu of Exobiology) The Honor I'll basically ignore, because the Romulans have very little use for it on their missions. Perhaps as a mission-stealer he'd be better, but again, QtR will make Fair Play use much higher than ever before. In space, the Stellar Cartography for walls could better be supplied by Selveth (who also sports double Navigation for Gravimetric Distortion, Navigational Hazards, Stellar Flare, etc.), but in a space-oriented deck you'll probably want him anyway for his Stellar Cartography on missions. His SCIENCE is also good, but I think you'll see dilemmas like Scientific Method fade in popularity with the release of Dr. McCoy. Furthermore, he can be taken out fairly easily by a Scientific Method, with relatively high CUNNING (8) and no Treachery or Greed, which is a definite minus. As for actual mission requirements, his skills are still only so-so: both are used sparingly, and he's not too strong with either one due to his space/planet split. For planet dilemmas, his Exobiology pairs up nicely with Selveth's Geology, but you'll need another Exobiology from someplace else for Odo's "Cousin." The other Exo would be best supplied by either Takket or Ambassador Tomalak, which brings me to the best thing about this card. What do both Ambassador Tomalak and The Centurion have in common? Yep, it's their [AU] icons. STP-drop is still a very powerful strategy, and although It's Only a Game limits you to dropping four personnel, four personnel and a ship at any location for free is nothing to laugh at. There's a player in my area who plays a nasty STP-PNZ deck. The deck is pretty heavy with AU personnel; the first few turns will be spent drawing cards, then by turn three or four he'll STP-drop a Decius with a good number of personnel on it (about seven). If IOAG shows up, he still gets four personnel for free, and with [AU] personnel like Zefram Cochrane, T'Shonra, Thomas Paris, Sevek, Samuel Clemens, Garak, Major Rakal, Dr. Telek R'Mor, Ambassador Tomalak, and, now, our favorite Centurion, any four of these will bring you a lot closer to your dilemma or mission skill needs, and at interrupt speed in a PNZ deck... ouch! Plus, he gets a free staffed ship to battle with. Even in non-PNZ decks, it's still powerful to just use a good number of [AU] personnel and ships, then STP-drop them in.

As for other miscellaneous things? His attributes are OK, much like the rest of this card. Not spectacular, but not weak either. The Command icon is a bonus, but Romulans have plenty of these. Of course, the Original Series icon may prove to benefit him well, and Keras or the Gal Gath'thong (or some related card) might provide a bonus use for him too. (It wouldn't surprise me if the Gal Gath'thong had an anti-PNZ use.)

Spot's Note: The Gal Gath'thong can special download him, which increases his usefullness, although I'd probably download Keras, the ship's matching commander, instead.

The final verdict: Not a bad card, but he's probably not going into my Romulan deck either. He's just a slightly above average personnel, who's definitely useful but doesn't quite make the cutoff for inclusion in my decks, just like Tamarith, Dr. Koramar, Patahk, D'Vin, Sorus, and many others. I'd use him if playing STP-drop, or maybe as a Tent card, but that's about it.
