TwT Card Review #18 - Classic Tricorder (#13, U)
by Sergei Rachmaninoff Guess what I just (accidentally) did... I deleted the files that showed what order the cards were released in. Oops. So, instead of doing them in order they were revealed on the website, I'll simply go through them in order of number after today's and the next one. Classic Tricorder (#13, U)
Ah, the first of the Classic Equipment revealed. It's got quite a bit of power behind it: apparently more flexible in which personnel can use it, and more flexibility in what's added than the regular ol' (or is it new?) Tricorder possesses. Of course, the downside is that only [OS] personnel can use it. That means Ensign O'Brien, Lt. D'Amato, Lt. Dax, Lt. Nagata, Lt. Watley, Mr. Scott, Mr. Spock, and Daval. A rather short list of personnel, but almost all of them would be included in an Original Series-themed deck, which is the logical place for this card. Heck, it even reports for free at Sherman's Peak if K-7 is there or can be downloaded by Lt. Dax, another key card in an Original Series deck. Is it worthwhile? Definitely. Although Physics isn't required for any dilemmas, it's found on many a Federation (and Klingon) space mission, and provides extra backup for Ensign O'Brien, Lt. Sulu, and Korax. The Geology is important for when you go to planets as well (definitely something to plan on with QtR for Big Picture around). Of course, several of the people that enable its use (Lts. Nagata and D'Amato) already have the skill, and you don't really need more than two of it (unless playing a Geological Survey deck, in which this card would be a definite inclusion). Adding extra ENGINEER and SCIENCE is a big boost though, whether on planets or in space. In space it's the ENGINEER you'll be wanting in case you run into a Theta-Radiation Poisoning (or want to let Scotty solve Ancient Computer all by himself. ;-). And in both planets and on space, the SCIENCE will be nice for Scientific Method... but beware, adding SCIENCE to your personnel also makes more targets for Unscientific Method, and many players seed the combo so you encounter Scientific Method first, thus ensuring a target for Unscientific Method. There's no real way around this (if seeded with Scientific Method last, you could keep the Tricorder set on one of the other three skills, then switch it to SCIENCE for the Scientific Method). Note that Mr. Spock will almost always be chosen for Unscientific Method regardless of what setting the Classic Tricorder's on, so this drawback is mitigated somewhat as long as you have Spock in play. Well, that's about all that there is to say about this card in terms of what's printed on it. There's a few extra things that need to be discussed, though. Firstly, it's an Equipment card, so it'll keep somebody from dying to a Common Thief. (Always a good thing.) It's also a good probe for many cards, including probably the most infamous of them all, Visit Cochrane Memorial. Adding ENGINEER to your personnel makes it easier to lessen the effects of It's Only a Game, but the Classic Communicator is even better in this respect (but more on that in that review). It can also be nixed by a Disruptor Overload, which is starting to see more play due to its flexibility: it'll slow down Cargo Run decks, Borg decks when you nuke their Assimilation Table, and be quite useful in general against the Dominion... Gurat'urak only protects one equipment, so you still have a decent chance of nailing one of the important ones: Jem'Hadar Birthing Chamber, Ketracel-White, and a hand weapon. So I wouldn't rely on my equipment sticking around forever -- just a word of caution for those trying to slim down their personnel selection by letting equipment replace personnel with classifications. Definitely make sure you can pass Scientific Method without the assistance of equipment. Also, you can only change its skill once per turn, so be judicious with its use. Don't change it without at least thinking about what skills you'll need for the rest of your turn. Plus, it's a Tricorder for several things, most notably defusing Tribble Bombs. Tent for the Starship Enterprise, play it for free to K-7, use its special download to get Lt. Dax, then use hers to get the Classic Tricorder. You can scan for Tribble Bombs right away without even sacrificing a card play. It also makes Founder Secret and Ferengi Bug that much easier to pass, allows you to solve the hard-to-steal and rarely-duplicated Quest for the Sword. Not too much more about this card... well, what did you expect? It's a Tricorder! ;-) The final verdict: If you're playing a heavy OS deck, put it in. It's not a bad Tent card either if you're worried about Tribble Bombs, or not a bad card to put in your deck if playing Cochrane Memorial. Outside of these circumstances, though, I don't see it being too useful. (All of the Classic equipment is like this). Sorry there's nothing too deep in this review, but this card really isn't that complex.
