Putting the "G" Back into ST:CCG
by Andrew Ambler

While I was reading the very first issue of "Where No One Has Gone Before" in print, I noticed the article entitled "Going To The Top" by Chris Stevenson. In it I read that the "Going To The Top" deck is an extremely fast, almost one-turn win deck. I saw that it isn't always a good deck to play due to the fact that it is so abusive and most people say that it does nothing to enhance the game unless all you have your eyes on is the regional finals. I am of the same mind as Chris due to the fact that I think that the game is ruined by people playing pure abusive decks such as the Borg swarm deck or the Going to the top deck or the really annoying Q By-pass deck that is just not worth playing against.

This issue was brought up at a local tournament that I went to the day after reading the article. As I was told that all abusive decks can be left at home and the game was just for a bit of fun and socialising, I left my Bajoran/Non-Aligned Battle deck at home and went with a trial deck: Federation/Bajoran. I was slaughtered in the first game by my opponent who was playing an all Gamma Quadrant Dominion deck, with a Colony, Horga'hn, and what I have named "The Terrible Three": Telepathic Alien Kidnappers, Alien Probe, and Static Warp Bubble. The game was over within around 3 turns. Because of only 3 people being at the tournament I got a bye for the next game which gave my time to watch my (soon to be) other opponent be absolutely thrashed by "The Terrible Three" also.

At the end of that game I announced that I was very annoyed by the fact that I was told that we were to be having a nice game with no abusive decks. At that point I was joined by my now fellow gamers with my complaint and therefore we immediately drew up a list of cards that were to be the turning point of the game. The title of the list was rightly chosen as "Putting the G Back into ST:CCG". Some of the cards that we banned were cards like the Black Hole, The Terrible Three, Q bypass and Colony (to name a few). The tournament was then restarted and everything went as well as possible.

The list has now been in place for a while now and most games have been fun and fair. With the soon to be released Blaze Of Glory range, most of the cards on this list will not be used in tournaments because of new cards set to remove them from the game. The big question is, will the game recover or will new cards that are just as bad replace them? I hope that the game will stay as it is now with "The Terrible Three" being banned from our local tournaments.
