First Annual Rokne Awards
by Olav "The Pendari Champion" Rokne

People are always asking me, "Olav, why haven't you written something like Ruling Britannia? You write a lot for WNOHGB, Ruling Brit is one of the best things on the page, and I think that you could write something amusing along those lines."

In response I generally punch them in the face.

You see, as much as I love WNOHGB and Ruling Britannia (Props to you Ian), I also realize that pandering to my audience, or writing a cheap photocopy of Ruling Brit would be debasing my artistic sensibilities.

So, no I will never write a Ruling Brit style column. I will however Give Ruling Brit XXIV the Rokne Award for best article I have seen on STCCG culture in the last year.

What's that? You want me to hand out more STCCG awards? I guess I'll have to comply...

How about "Person whose name sounds the most like that of a James Bond villain"

The Award goes to... Lee Sneathen. I had to look through pages and pages of STCCG players to realize that nothing has the same ring as

"You don't expect to defeat me Sneathen? Do you?"
"No, I already have defeated you Mr. Bond!"

OK... the next isn't an award that is necessarily STCCG related, it is one that I think most everyone will have a vote for: "Worst Star Trek Related Game of 2002."

Now, I've heard a lot of complaints about "Project Trek" and without a doubt, at best, it needs a lot of work. But nothing can compare with "Voyager the Arcade Game" In which you lose points for shooting Janeway.

For obvious disregard for Trek Sense, the Voyager Arcade Game gets the Rokne Award for worst Star Trek related game of 2002.

Now the "person who no one has met, and yet everyone seems to know of" award goes to Chris Munroe, who after appearing in a total of two STCCG events ever, has become a legend in the Calgary STCCG scene, and has been mentioned in enough WNOHGB articles that I have received e-mails asking me who he is.

For many years, people have looked to the skies and asked themselves "How can I make an entirely irrelevant chocolate bar." I dedicate the next category to anyone who has ever asked that question.

Now, there were lots of nominees for the most irrelevant chocolate bar of 2002. The rules were clear, it had to contain chocolate, and had to be available from the manufacturer in this calendar year. Unfortunately this disqualified the Iron Bru bar, which is a delicious combination of fake-sour-orange flavour and crazy glue, as it does not involve chocolate.

The "Sour Beaner" bar was a close runner up. Nicknamed the "Buy it now before the manufacturer sobers up" bar, this delicious novelty contained sour jelly beans, surrounded by marshmallow grape nougat, with peanut butter, and jelly and then surrounded by delicious Cadbury milk chocolate. I actually bit in to one of these once. It only loses out because, as irrelevant as that may sound, it is a great way to punish kids you hate on Halloween.

The most irrelevant chocolate bar of 2002 is (rips open the envelope) the "Dots" bar. Smarties surrounded in chocolate, available for the first time. That's right, chocolate covered... chocolate. There is no good reason for this to exist.

"Person whose name sounds like the most like that of a Superhero's secret identity" goes to the most unlikely person. If you've ever met Wes Victory, you will recognize that he's not all that tall, has a round face, an undefined chin and an entirely unmuscular physique. None of these descriptions are negative, it's just that no one looks less super-hero-ey, than him... but the name... it just sounds like that of a super hero on his time off! "Mild Mannered Wes Victory runs into a phone booth... and out comes... BLUE VICTORY, Defender of justice, man of steel!"

That wraps up this years Rokne awards, hope you enjoyed them. If you have any suggestions of further awards, please e-mail me.
