The New Star Trek
by William "Spock" Springer Last Thursday, Decipher announced the next Star Trek product: Second Edition. And the players rose as one and cried out "Thank goodness it's not 'Project Trek'!" Ok, so it wasn't quite like that, but this announcement is still a Good Thing. We were promised at least one more expansion of ST:CCG to wrap up the broken links, but after that the game seemed destined to stop. With no new cards being released, the tournament environment would become stale. There would be no new cards to hunt for. Decipher's proposed 'Project Trek' would be no help; a cross between YJ and LotR, it was too simple to really interest the players who enjoyed Star Trek's complexity. Now, only some of the cards in Second Edition will be compatible with the old game, but we will at least be getting new cards regularly, with the added bonus that those players who are not interested in SE can buy only a fraction of what they usually would and trade away any non-compatible cards, while anyone interested in both games effectively gets two for the price of one! From the looks of it, SE will be similar to the old Trek (Shall we call it FE for First Edition now?) ST:CCG has already outlasted every other CCG I'm aware of besides Magic; let's hope the new plans help keep it around for a few more years. I'll tell you one thing, though….as part of fixing the broken links, I expect at least one more barbering card! Comments? Post on the New WNOHGB BBS! |
