The Taylor/Rokne Debates, Part One: ROLEPLAYERS
by Olav "The Pendari Champion" Rokne and Ian Taylor Olav: "Ian, In the past I've seen that you occasionally insult RPG gamers, I was wondering if you would care to elaborate on your position?" Ian: "Sure. While I know a lot of Roleplayers and I am even friends with some of them, it never ceases to amaze me what a sad bunch they generally are. They are all either geeks with no life whose best friend is their D12 or artsy gothic losers who need to get out in sunlight a lot more." Olav: "You don't think that you are being a little harsh on them? I find it hard to believe that every single RPG player is as bad as all that." Ian: "Well I agree to an extent but I feel that all true roleplayers are infected with a common gene. While you may be able to play the odd game of D&D without becoming infected, as soon as they start using phrases such as 'character depth' and 'storytelling system' or start creating alternate online persona based on their RPG character then they are lost. I have seen good friends depressed because their character's dad has died. I have seen attractive girls who won't go out on a Friday night because they are resolving their characters personal crisis. It's really sad." Olav: "And I've seen CCGers who argue over what the worst Magic card of all time is, who calculate the relative merits of different STCCG personnel on a logarithmic scale, and who will claim that Highlander 2 is the greatest movie of all time. Basically what I'm saying is that insanity can be found wherever you look, and that any group will have a crazy obsessive minority. You are painting RPG players with a very wide brush here." Ian: "I don't think so. I have also seen soccer fans who can name every manager of their team since 1900 and art critics who can tell you who painted any picture just by looking at it, that's not the point. Roleplayers are the only group of people who let their hobby get confused with real life. That in itself makes roleplayers far sadder than real people. Don't even get me started on dress sense, personal hygiene and social skills." Olav: "Hmmm... I don't have a reply to that, so I'm going to have to use my persuasion ability on you. I have a 12 in that... now where did I put my 20 sided dice?" Ian: "Olav, you don't have persuasion ability!" Olav: "Sure I do, says so right here on my character sheet!" Ian: "That doesn't represent reality!" Olav: "Hmmm... I'm going to use my Dominate attribute to convince you otherwise." Ian: "No..... must ...... resist........roleplaying..... must......... hate........ White Wolf....... Damn Jedi mind tricks." Olav: "What's your willpower? You are allowed to make a resistance roll." Ian: "9..... no wait.... 8 because I get -1 to all rolls made on a Wednesday. What dice do I need to roll?" Comments? Post on the New WNOHGB BBS! |
